Taro® Ultra Cylinder Oil: Key Features for Two-Stroke Marine Engines

Taro® Ultra is Chevron’s advanced cylinder oil series for slow-speed two-stroke crosshead marine engines. It is engineered to handle modern fuels, including VLSFO, MGO, HFO with scrubber systems, LNG, and methanol, providing superior protection for cylinder liners and piston rings.

1. High BN for Acid Neutralization

The Base Number (BN) in Taro® Ultra oils ranges from 40 to 140, depending on the variant. BN ensures effective neutralization of acids produced from sulphur-containing fuels, preventing acidic corrosion, especially in engines running with high-sulphur fuels or intermittent distillates.

2. Low Deposit Formation

Taro® Ultra contains advanced detergent-dispersant technology, which minimizes piston ring and crown deposits, even under challenging operating conditions. This improves engine efficiency and reduces the risk of scuffing.

3. Cold Corrosion Protection

When operating with fuels having varying sulphur content, cold corrosion is a major concern. Taro® Ultra provides excellent alkalinity reserve and protective film strength to prevent corrosion at cylinder liner and piston crown top lands.

4. Fuel Flexibility

Taro® Ultra is compatible with a wide range of modern marine fuels:

  • VLSFO (Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil)
  • MGO / MDO (Marine Gas / Diesel Oil)
  • HSHFO with scrubbers
  • LNG / Methanol

The feed rate can be optimized depending on fuel type and engine condition, improving oil efficiency and operational cost.
